6th of May, 10am - 12.30pm at Eastbourne House Arts, Bethnal Green Workshop Guest: Olissa Francisco This fusion workshop is inspired by the rich and layered South African music and movement style, and draws from the technique of Traditional West African dance, and the feeling and vibe that is House movement. It’s an uplifting and dynamic session focused on celebration and stamina carried by the deepest AfroHouse beats. It’s all about inspiring and enriching your personal groove, expanding your expression, and connecting with the beat. Expect sweat, smiles, and release. At five years old, Olissa’s dance journey began with contemporary training and rigorous ballet technique. After a childhood at the academy, and a small break from dance altogether, she returned to the dance world in University continuing ballet, contemporary and jazz, but was fortunate enough to be introduced to traditional West African. Instantly consumed by the style, she has since dedicated her training to movement originating in Guinea, Ghana, Senegal, and Brazil, among others.  Over the last nine years living and traveling internationally, she has studied and performed with a variety of master teachers and choreographers. Having been predominately based in London over the last seven years, Olissa has become deeply immersed in Afro-fusion movement from Brazil and West and South Africa. The development of her freestyle grew from the conscious communities of the London and San Francisco House scenes.  Magical connections with dancers, DJ’s, and serious beats, across countless dance floors, has inspired Olissa to combine her love for what these two worlds stand for and focus on their union both in spirit and in form. The celebration of life and its cycles which lives at the root of all African Dance forms and the freedom and acceptance that is House, has Olissa applying her technical foundation where these two worlds meet: Afro-fusion, Afro-House, and Freestyle! Olissa’s energy comes from meaningful connections, diverse travel, and that drum!

18th of March, Saturday, 3-5pm, Eastbourne House Arts, Top Floor Workshop guest: Dan Swinton This workshop will focus on acting sensitively and reciprocally, using a stage area and some dialogue. We will build up this skill with a sequence of exercises designed to increase the actor's ability to listen and respond physically and vocally. Many practitioners have worked to build authenticity into the stage-life of performers and the workshop will make use of some of their approaches. It aims to provide a basis for further experimentation and development.

no experience, acting, any age, London workshops Saturday, 4th of March, 3-5pm, The Rag Factory, London Workshop Guest: Geoffrey Williams, freelance theatre director and playwright "I think it’s a great initiative, sharing the process of theatre making with people who’re not from a theatre background. What we do can seem rather mystical and arcane, and so often I hear people say “I could never do that”. But I see the twinkle in their eyes and I think: if only you had a chance to try, you might love it. And it doesn’t have to have anything to do with becoming a professional performer. It could just be a personal exploration a hobby". Brief of the workshop: Who’s afraid of Shakespeare? I am. A lot of actors are. But we don’t need to be. And we certainly don’t need to have expert knowledge of Elizabethan verse to tackle the bard.  In this workshop we’ll use one of Shakespeare’s sonnets as provocation for a performance. We’ll learn how to swim in the text without fear, and delight in the juicy language. We’ll release ourselves physically and seek to touch, if only for a second, the hugeness of emotion in the sonnet. Tester class available, contact us via offthe_page@hotmail.com

Saturday, 18th of February, 3-5pm, Wusi Creative Space, 4 Broadway Market Mews Hackney London E8 4TS AmIanActor workshop with Frank Wurzinger During this workshop will look at: 'solo and group improvisation, play with red nose, audience relationship, saying yes to each exploring being authentic in the moment'. Clown- Play and Presence "Every human being is a clown but only few have the courage to show it." - Charlie Rivel Open for anyone with some experience in play Clowns might be simple and truthful or outrageously and joyfully over the top and always play with a sense of pleasure. We are looking of ways of staying optimistic and finding the game in the worst situations. Through a series of movement exercises and games we liberate ourselves from blocks and inhibitions to find the freedom to be ourselves and play with anything. We explore the edge of what is acceptable? How do we individually make people laugh? When does comedy become tragedy?' Join us for this workshop, contact us via offthe_page@hotmail.com

Saturday, 18th of February, 12-2pm, Wusi Creative Space, 4 Broadway Market Mews Hackney London E8 4TS AmIaDancer workshop with Ian Hathway We are very happy to try something different during our AmIaDancer workshop cycle. The workshop will be an exploration of the aesthetic of Blues dance - such as grounded and earthbound movement, a relaxed and athletic posture, and lag - and a heavy focus on improvisation in relationship to music. AmIaDancer participants will learn some steps and patterns, and may do partnered work as well.  Sounds fun! :) Ian has been dancing for a decade now, and cannot imagine life without it. It began with ballroom and Lindy Hop classes, and it wasn't until he went a summer without that he realized he couldn't stay away for long. African American vernacular dances form the core of Ian's knowledge and expertise, with a heavy focus on Lindy Hop, Blues, Charleston, and solo jazz. He has recently finished his Master's in Ensemble Theatre, focusing his dissertation on African American vernacular dance and its relationship with the actor's body and text. He loves the way that movement can change the way we think and speak, and exploring how dancing changes how we interpret a character's thoughts, words, and personality. Ian teaches dance in London with Swing Patrol, and has also recently appeared as The Entertainer in Sylum at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and as the all-singing all-dancing Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing at the Rose Playhouse.
